This series contains correspondence and narrative reports regarding the work of nurses in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, Utah and California. Correspondents include Indian Office officials such as the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, the District Medical Director, the Director of Nursing, Sallie Jeffries, field nurses and doctors and agency superintendents. Topics include staffing of Indian Service hospitals and sanatoriums, appointments, transfers, visits to agencies and hospitals by the District Supervisory Nurse and the Assistant Supervisor of Nurses, in-service training and evaluations of field nurses. Reports include inspection and evaluation of nurses in Indian Service hospitals, including the volume of work, routine duties, special medical techniques, general housekeeping conditions, types of accommodations, and recommendations by the District Supervisory Nurse.
Agencies and Hospitals included in this series include: the Albuquerque Hospital and Sanatorium, Carson Agency, Colorado River Agency, Consolidated Ute Agency, Fort Apache Agency, Fort Yuma Agency, Hopi Agency, Jicarilla Agency, Mescalero Agency, Mission Agency, Navajo Agency, Phoenix Indian School, Phoenix Indian Hospital and Sanatorium, Pima Agency, San Carlos Agency, Santa Fe Hospital, San Xavier Sanatorium, Sells Agency, Sherman Institute, Truxton Canon Agency, Uintah and Ouray Agency, and United Pueblos Agency. Of particular note is a 1942 inspection report completed for Colorado River War Relocation Center in Poston, Arizona, which was conducted soon after the hospital was established there. This report lists the names of physicians, dentists, nurses and other medical staff who were assigned to the hospital, most of whom were themselves internees.
